Approximately fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.
Officers report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then discovered numerous other smeared cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state initial examinations indicate the substance was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; authorities are presently not informed of any injuries in connection with the event," they commented.
City officials said they were working "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the public for tips.
A high-ranking representative said the vandalism made him stunned and had to be solved promptly.
"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist attack five years ago," he posted on online, referring to the death of nine people by a shooter aiming at people of immigrant origin in 2020.
