Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The justices found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 presidential election.
