It has been 30 years since the original Toy Story movie debuted, establishing Pixar as a major animation studio and introducing audiences to iconic figures like Woody (the actor) and the space ranger (the voice talent), who are now famous worldwide.

Coming in 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a glimpse into the plot but keeping fans curious how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.

The Latest Addition: A Digital Device Spooks the Toys

In the teaser shows the young girl — who inherited the toy collection when he left for college — getting a latest plaything, one that terrifies the familiar toy group. Bonnie acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.

Theoretically, the frog-shaped tablet will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the toys seem to view it as a danger coming to replace them, which it likely will.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

An element the trailer doesn't touch on is why Woody is returned with his friends in the child's bedroom. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a new adventure with the shepherdess (the actress), journeying with a carnival and assisting prize toys find good homes.

Certainly, the filmmakers will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him appear in the familiar setting unexpectedly is a little strange, though. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have returned with him. And where is Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?

Continuity from the Previous Film

Fortunately, some elements are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act the cowboy did before setting off for his fresh path was pass his symbol of authority to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her in charge of the toy domain. In the teaser shows the badge attached to her outfit.

Hopefully she is still the driving force among the toys.
