A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
